(SR200) Determination of Improved Pavement Ride Quality (Smoothness) when Utilizing 3D Modeling and Automatic Machine Guidance (AMG)

The central purpose of this study is to evaluate a hypothesis whether the use of 3-dimensional (3D) modeling and automated machine guidance (AMG) technology (to be referred herein as AMG for brevity) on highway projects will result in improved rideability and smoothness over those projects using conventional construction and measurement methods.  The research study will utilize the data gathered from five case studies to evaluate the hypothesis.
The key questions of interest for this study include:
• Does the use of AMG result in overall initial smoothness improvements when compared with those projects using conventional methods?
• Does the use of AMG result in reduced variability in initial smoothness measurements when compared with those projects using conventional methods?
• How does the AMG compare with conventional methods in controlling the number of localized roughness areas?
• Given the variability in site conditions and construction practices among case study projects, is the observed evidence consistent enough to conclude that the use of AMG results in improved initial smoothness over conventional methods?
