(SR200) Planning Discipline Academy - Session 1: Oh, the Places You’ll Go: Making the Most Out of Modeling

Seminar Start Date:

5/20/2020 2:00 PM

Seminar End Time:

5/20/2020 4:00 PM

While FHWA Planners aren’t necessarily tasked with developing Travel Demand Models, there are a number of situations in which you will need to interact with models and those who do develop them. There’s no requirement for MPOs to use Travel Demand Models so some agencies don’t use one at all, but those who do model travel demand can use tools as simple as Excel or sophisticated custom off-the-shelf modeling software.

In this session, you'll learn how to critically review the information underlying models of all kinds, how to effectively engage your partners, and how to ask the right questions to understand how they developed their model.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the inputs and outputs of travel demand models and their appropriate applications and limitations.
  • Evaluate a travel model and provide useful feedback during process reviews, TMA Certification Reviews, Federal Planning Findings and NEPA.
  • Recognize emerging technologies and additional resources to provide better stewardship to MPOs (and State DOTs) on how to improve their travel demand models.
